WADSWORTH — The Wadsworth Older Adults Foundation raised more than $14,000 for the Soprema Senior Center during its 12 days of Christmas fundraiser raffle.

Wadsworth Mayor Robin Laubaugh selected the final three main prize winners, as well as bonus raffle winners, on Friday at the Soprema Senior Center Café in front of a crowd of seniors. After the selections were made, Laubaugh called each winner to let them know they had won.

Wadsworth Older Adults Foundation Trustee Jim Dull said the fundraiser has nine sponsors who donated $500 each. The foundation uses the money from the sponsors to get gift cards from local businesses to use as prizes for the raffle.

“Instead of asking for donations, the professional friends donate the money and all those gift cards are purchased,” Wadsworth Councilman-at-Large Tom Stugmeyer said. “That way it doesn’t put a burden on any of the businesses, especially around the holidays.”

Raffle tickets were sold for $10 apiece, and more than 1,400 tickets were sold this year, Dull said. A ticket was selected each weekday since Dec. 4, and every daily winner received at least $300 in gift cards from local businesses. The winner of the grand prize won $600 worth of gift cards.

Soprema Senior Center Director Lori Wilkinson said the money the Wadsworth Older Adults Foundation has raised in the past has gone toward a lot of big improvements to the senior center.

For instance, she said the foundation’s donations have paid for a permanent awning at the entrance of the senior center and helped to fund the meal voucher program. The donations also help keep membership free for seniors.

“They are the backbone of everything we do …” Wilkinson said. “We have been so appreciative of the community supporting the senior center and the Wadsworth Older Adults Foundation.”
