Moment with the Mayor for March 10, 2018

APPA Rally
Once again, the recent annual American Municipal Power/OMEA legislative rally in Washington DC provided a good opportunity to meet with federal lawmakers regarding local concerns. Being part of a large group, such as AMP and OMEA, allows us to communicate messages with greater impact and advocate on behalf of our electric utility customers. While there, we were also updated about legislative issues impacting the electric industry. It is very important that lawmakers hear from public power constituents on how legislation and regulations hurt or benefit communities. The main topics covered by AMP/OMEA representatives on Capitol Hill were concerns about the impact of sequestration on Build America Bonds, the impact of increasing transmission costs and the importance of tax-exempt financing to municipal governments. The rally allowed for the valuable exchange of information and between public power communities and legislators.

Job Fair
Medina County Economic Development Corporation has multiple initiatives that help individuals looking for good jobs connect with businesses looking for employees. As I mentioned before, MCEDC is planning a job fair at Wadsworth High School, for the second year. A variety of companies will be represented at the Field House, giving students the opportunity to talk about jobs, careers, and to identify work that is actually done right here in Wadsworth. While service and retail is obvious to most of our young people, manufacturing, back office operations, customer service, and other professions are not as well known. The event is being held again so that students can be made aware of the many different kinds of employment possibilities, for the present and the future. At the job fair, they will be able to talk with professionals who will ask questions to help them interpret their skills, as well as share the kinds of positions available with and without a college degree, the kinds of tuition reimbursement programs that are available, and what the work truly looks like. Students will come away with valuable knowledge that will assist them in their career choices and job searches.

American Legion
The American Legion Post 170, in Wadsworth, has generously supported several organizations in the City for many years, including the City of Wadsworth by donating all of the flags that are flown at City Hall, downtown and the fire stations. The American Legion also cooperates with three closely related organizations: American Legion Auxiliary- the wives, daughters and grand-daughters of the veterans; Sons of the American Legion - the sons and grandsons of the veterans; and the Legion Riders- comprised of members from all of the American Legion family. The American Legion family’s generosity to 30 nonprofits in Wadsworth and nearby organizations totaled over $85,000 in 2017. I am so appreciative of their ongoing generosity and community service!

Until next week……..
