Water Line Testing Procedures |
|
DISINFECTION:
-
Chlorine granules will be used to obtain an initial reading of 50mgl in pipe.
-
After 24 hours a sample( taken by our dept.) will be taken. The chlorine residual must be at least 25 mgl.
PRESSURE TEST:
-
Prior to pressure testing, a flush of the main to be tested, will be conducted by the contractor with the help of our dept. This will remove the high chlorine content, and help remove air trapped in the main.
-
A pressure test will be conducted by the contractor with a person from the Water Dept. present. ( Water dept. has test gauge and hose connections)
-
Water Main should hold static pressure before calling Water Dept. to initiate Pressure Test.
-
The test pressure will be 150 psi. or 1-1/2 times the static pressure of the connecting waterline WHICH EVER IS GREATER.
-
All main valves and hydrant watch valves must be in the open position and will be included in the test.
-
Pressure test will be for two hours in duration.
-
Allowable leakage: ½ gallon per hour per diameter inch, per mile of pipe.
-
Pressure during test should not deviate by more than 5 psi and will not fall below the required test pressure.
-
Clean water tubs hoses etc. must be used during test. ( approved by dept. prior to using)
BACTERIA TESTING:
-
Before Bacteria test can begin the chlorine residual must be at 1.0mgl or less.
-
When contractor is ready, a bacteria test will be conducted by the Water Department. This test will consist of the following steps:
a. One (1) Sterile Sample will be taken at least every 1200 lineal feet of pipe.
b. Fire hydrants will not be used for obtaining samples for Bacteria Test.
c. Samples will be taken from taps made directly on main. ( to be provided by the contractor)
d. Samples will be taken to Water Treatment Plant so lab personnel can conduct the actual bacteria test.
e. Two (2) samples will be taken from each sample location. One initial set, then 24 hours later another set will be taken.
f. Two (2) consecutive clean sets are required for passing and the Waterline considered safe for consumption.
